High-quality, sophisticated, and endlessly drinkable. This sums up the red and white wines coming out of Germany today Austrian wine long-lived in the shadow of it German neighbors, but the country has its own, thriving wine culture. Unlike in Germany, the wines are resolutely dry, and the country has its own set of native grape varieties. Yes, there’s some very good, and dry, Riesling, but the flagship grape is crisp Grüner Veltliner, leading the pack alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Vienna’s intriguing Gemischter Satz blends. Reds include the spicy Blaufränkisch and fresh Zweigelts, among others.
