The Kitchen at Astor Center

No longer trapped in the long shadow of Tequila, Mezcal has finally come into the light. Beloved for its seductively smoky flavors and transparent terroir, Mezcal is the next destination for serious spirits connoisseurs and craft cocktailers alike.

With a rich cultural tradition of small, localized, artisanal production, and diverse flavor profiles based on agave species used, each Mezcal can be as unique as a fingerprint. We’ve scoured Oaxaca and beyond for a selection of the most unique and expressive bottlings to taste together. In this intimate discussion-based workshop we’ll cover the origins and production, as well as the historical and cultural climates that have shaped Mezcal, and how to select standout spirits for your collection.

So, as they say in Oaxaca: para todo mal, mezcal, y para toda bien también (“for everything bad, mezcal; for everything good, the same”)

Learning objectives:
  • Establish an understanding of Mezcal production
  • Familiarize attendees with the geographical production areas
  • Learn, through tasting, the flavor profiles of each spirit, as well as those common to different production methods and species
  • Explore the cultural and historic significance of Mezcal

Guests will receive:
  • One welcome beverage
  • Six tasting pours of Mezcal
  • Palate cleansing bread and cheese
  • Two hours of education, including time for Q&A with an Astor Center instructor
  • Access to our state-of-the-art tasting facility
